Why?
What rights can any person exert in the face of extreme complicity by the mechanisms of the machinery of the State?
Which single person can prevail against the ferocity of abuses perpetrated by the US president and the unthinking and unquestioning obeisance of the US Congress and Senate?
What single person can overcome legal obstacles - when the rule of law is perverted and habeus corpus writs are rendered meaningless?
When human rights are relegated to pithy epithets, only to be upheld in times that are not so extraordinary, citizens of democracies world wide must take a stand against the excesses and abuses of power wielded by those in whom such trust is reposed.
That is why David Hicks and the many hundreds who have been locked up without charge or trial and who have been tortured and murdered by the US and its client states matter so much.
